Norwegian Aura will begin welcoming guests earlier than originally planned, with Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) opening bookings for two new inaugural Mediterranean cruises departing in May 2027. The additional sailings connect Trieste, Italy, and Athens, Greece, giving travellers an opportunity to experience the cruise line’s newest and largest ship before it heads to the Caribbean.

Announced on October 9, the two voyages have been made possible by the ship’s anticipated early delivery. The first departure is scheduled for May 2, 2027, from Trieste, followed by a second sailing from Athens on May 12.

The announcement also changes the ship’s previously communicated European schedule. Rather than beginning its guest operations with the seven-day voyage from Trieste to Barcelona on May 21, the vessel is now expected to welcome its first guests earlier in the month.

The new itineraries combine the Adriatic coast, Montenegro and several of Greece’s best-known islands. Both voyages operate between Trieste and Athens, but each offers a different sequence of ports and a different duration.

May 2, 2027: Trieste to Athens

The first cruise will last 10 days, departing from Trieste on May 2 and arriving in Athens (Piraeus), Greece, on May 12.

The itinerary includes:

  • Dubrovnik, Croatia
  • Split, Croatia
  • Bar, Montenegro
  • Corfu, Greece
  • Santorini, Greece
  • Mykonos, Greece

For travellers in northeastern Italy and neighbouring countries, the departure from Trieste is a particularly relevant detail. It offers an opportunity to join the ship in an Italian port before sailing south through the Adriatic and into the Greek islands.

The itinerary also combines historic coastal cities with island destinations that are popular for their beaches, architecture and distinctive local character.

May 12, 2027: Athens to Trieste

The second inaugural sailing will last nine days, departing from Athens (Piraeus) on May 12 and arriving in Trieste on May 21.

Its scheduled ports of call are:

  • Rhodes, Greece
  • Mykonos, Greece
  • Santorini, Greece
  • Corfu, Greece
  • Bar, Montenegro
  • Split, Croatia
  • Zadar, Croatia

This reverse itinerary offers a different route through the region, with Rhodes added to the Greek island programme and Zadar included on the Croatian coast.

Together, the two voyages create an unusual opportunity to experience a new ship during its first Mediterranean operations, while visiting destinations across Greece, Croatia and Montenegro.

Why Norwegian Aura’s Mediterranean Debut Has Changed

The additional sailings follow the anticipated early delivery of the ship from the shipyard. NCL has said that the revised schedule will allow guests to come aboard sooner than originally expected.

The change is significant because the previously announced May 21 voyage from Trieste to Barcelona had been presented as the ship’s first Mediterranean sailing with guests.

The new cruises do not replace that voyage. Instead, they extend the ship’s European programme by adding two earlier departures before the existing seven-day itinerary.

According to the updated schedule, the May 21 cruise will still depart from Trieste and sail to Barcelona (Tarragona), with calls at Valletta, Malta; Salerno, Italy; and Rome (Civitavecchia), Italy.

The ship is then scheduled to cross the Atlantic on a 13-day voyage from Barcelona to Miami. From June through October 2027, it will operate seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises from Miami, followed by Western Caribbean itineraries during winter 2027/28.

As with any future ship deployment, the schedule remains subject to operational changes.

What to Expect On Board the New NCL Ship

At nearly 1,130 feet long and approximately 170,000 gross tons, Norwegian Aura is set to become Norwegian Cruise Line’s largest and longest ship to date. NCL says the vessel will be around 10% larger than Norwegian Aqua and Norwegian Luna.

One of its main features will be Ocean Heights, an outdoor activity complex spread across decks 18 to 21. The area is designed to bring together waterslides, adventure activities and family entertainment.

Planned attractions include Eclipse Racers, the cruise line’s first duelling mat-racer waterslides; Aura Free Fall, a drop-in body slide; the Aura Ropes Course; the Moon Climber obstacle course; and Aura Midway, with carnival-style games. Dedicated areas for children, teenagers and families will also form part of the complex.

The ship will additionally feature NCL’s largest pool deck and largest Vibe Beach Club to date.

The inaugural voyages are also expected to introduce guests to the vessel’s new entertainment programme. Among the announced productions is “Whitney: A Celebration of Whitney Houston”, developed in partnership with The Estate of Whitney E. Houston and Primary Wave Music. Other shows and entertainment experiences will include “ILLUMINOX: Infinite Wonder Unboxed”, The Vinyl Republic, Aura FIRST NIGHT and Latin LIVE!

Dining and wellness will also play a role in the new ship’s offering. Tamara will become NCL’s first specialty Indian restaurant, while The Panorama Room will provide an immersive complimentary dining venue. Mandara Spa is expected to include an extensive Thermal Suite and the first-at-sea Sensory Rain Pool, according to the cruise line.

From Trieste to Miami: The Ship’s First Season

After the two new inaugural Mediterranean sailings and the previously announced voyage to Barcelona, the ship will cross the Atlantic to begin its Caribbean programme from Miami.

During summer 2027, the planned seven-day Eastern Caribbean cruises will visit Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, Tortola in the British Virgin Islands and Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas.

The latter is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private island destination, which is undergoing a major transformation with the addition of Great Tides Waterpark and other guest facilities.

Cruising Passion has already explored these developments in its Great Stirrup Cay guide and its dedicated coverage of the Great Tides Waterpark.

For winter 2027/28, the planned Western Caribbean itineraries will include Roatan in Honduras, Costa Maya and Cozumel in Mexico, and Harvest Caye in Belize.

This deployment means the ship’s first season will span two distinct markets: a short Mediterranean introduction before a longer programme based in Miami.

A New Chapter for a Ship Built in Italy

The revised schedule is also relevant to Italy’s cruise industry. The vessel is being built by Fincantieri at Monfalcone, while Trieste will host the first of the newly announced guest sailings.

Cruising Passion previously covered the ship’s construction milestone in Norwegian Aura Float Out: NCL Reaches Major Milestone for Its Largest Ship Yet. That report followed the float-out at the Italian shipyard and examined the vessel’s role in NCL’s wider fleet development.

Readers looking for a broader introduction to the ship can also explore our original feature, Norwegian Aura NCL 2027: Everything About the Fleet’s Largest Ship, which covers the design, onboard attractions and planned deployment.

The addition of the two May voyages gives the vessel a more extensive Mediterranean opening than originally announced. It also puts Trieste in the spotlight, with the city serving as both the departure point for the first sailing and the arrival port for the second.

What Travellers Should Know

Bookings for the two new inaugural voyages have been opened by Norwegian Cruise Line. Travellers interested in either sailing should check the cruise line’s official website or consult a travel professional for current availability, fares, cabin options and applicable booking conditions.

The key dates are May 2, 2027, for the 10-day sailing from Trieste to Athens, and May 12, 2027, for the nine-day return itinerary from Athens to Trieste.

The ship is expected to continue to Barcelona later in May before crossing the Atlantic to Miami and beginning its Caribbean programme in June 2027.

With two additional voyages now part of the schedule, the Mediterranean will offer the first opportunity for guests to experience NCL’s newest and largest ship before its planned Caribbean deployment.

For cruise travellers following the development of the ship, the announcement marks an important update: the inaugural season is no longer centred on a single May departure from Trieste, but begins with two new itineraries linking Italy, Greece, Croatia and Montenegro.
